First audition: February 16th 2010. Apply online at www.nscd.ac.uk.

Northern School of Contemporary Dance is a unique dance training institution offering a select group of students the opportunity to develop and excel as dance artists in a conservatoire environment.

The Postgraduate Diploma was established in response to the identified lack within the industry of young dancers with company experience. This one-year full-time programme provides an opportunity for graduates of vocational training courses, or dance artists with some experience, to refine their skills and undertake extensive professional development.

The course comprises three programme pathways:
• the Postgraduate Company, Verve
• the Graduate Apprenticeship Scheme
• and the Advanced Training Scheme

Verve

Verve offers professional-level experience working as a member of a middle-scale touring contemporary dance company. Ten to twelve dancers tour a programme of new work over a six-month period to professional venues throughout the UK and selected European cities.

Some of the choreographers Verve has worked with in the last four years:
Rafael Bonachela, Kim Brandstrup, Laïla Diallo, Shobana Jeyasingh, Henri Oguike, Hofesh Shechter, Filip van Huffel, Fin Walker, David Zambrano.

Verve graduates have gone on to perform with companies including:
ACE Dance and Music, DV8, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Richard Alston Dance Company, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, StopGAP Dance Company, Tavaziva Dance, Tilted Productions.

Plans for the Verve 11 programme include choreography by:
Charles Linehan, Ben Wright, Thomas Noone, CobosMika Company.

Graduate Apprenticeship Scheme

Includes a work placement of between three and nine months with a professional dance company. Graduate Apprentices experience the processes involved in creating, rehearsing, producing and touring a professional performance programme.

Professional dance companies where students have undertaken placements include:
Akram Khan Dance Company, Bonachela Dance Company, Candoco Dance Company, Henri Oguike Dance Company, Jasmin Vardimon Dance Company, Motionhouse Dance Theatre, Phoenix Dance Theatre, Scottish Dance Theatre, Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company, The Cholmondeleys and The Featherstonehaughs.

A significant number of Apprenticeship Scheme graduates have gone on to work professionally with one or more of the companies listed above or have secured employment through contacts made during the placement.

Advanced Training Scheme

An intensive training programme in contemporary, ballet and selected release based techniques, supported by an individually tailored physical development programme. This pathway also provides opportunities to further refine creative and performance skills through the creation of work and participation in collaborative projects and open choreographic platforms.
