Recent reviews in The Stage and Dance Europe celebrate performances by NSCD students.

The Stage, April 15, ran a review of our annual Student Showcase performances, written by Kevin Berry. Each Spring, the normal timetable is taken over for six weeks by visiting choreographers creating works on the second and third years, whilst the first years undertake their own choreographic explorations. The works are then performed by the students over four nights at The Riley Theatre. This year, the final year students worked with Matthias Sperling and Simon Birch. The Stage reported that “the quality of work and the quality of staging at the Northern continue to impress.” Kevin asked two experts in the audience to pick out a final year dancer worth keeping an eye on. Pam Johnson, Dance Officer at Arts Council England, Yorkshire picked out Daniel Connor whilst Sharon Watson, Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre, picked Katherine McCabe. Both dancers were described in the review as “outstanding.” The works will be performed again at the Graduation performance, Thursday 8th July. See www.nscd.ac.uk/performances for booking details.

In the May edition of Dance Europe, Verve’s performance at The Place was reviewed by Donald Hutera who commented that “the ambiguities were tantalising and the company splendidly attuned to each other throughout.” He wrote particularly positively about “a riveting little duet by NSCD graduate Silja Thomsen” that he described as “a fine, tense showcase for Robert Goodby and Gemma Riley. Both adept and authoritative, these are dancers worth keeping an eye on.” Silja was one of the first students to graduate from our MA in Choreography last year. Robert and Gemma are both also graduates of NSCD, and will be on tour with Verve until July. See www.nscd.ac.uk/verve for tour dates.
