MATTHEW ROBINSON

Artistic Director & Programme Leader VERVE

BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance
PgDip in Performance (Apprenticeship Scottish Dance Theatre)

Role and responsibilities:

Artistically leading VERVE with all responsibilities that entails.

“I am intrigued by people. My choreographic work comes from ideas and the world around me, drawing on the physicality and humour of myself and those I work with to craft highly physical yet theatrically driven worlds for both performers and audiences to engage with. I am inspired by story, concept, and the simplicity and yet extraordinary complexity of human connection.”

Career History

Upon graduation from London Contemporary Dance School Matthew undertook an apprenticeship with Scottish Dance Theatre. He then joined the company working with an exciting international company of dancers, performing work by a diverse range of choreographers over many years.

In 2013 he was invited to jointly take on the responsibilities of Rehearsal Director, assisting in the creation of numerous works, supporting the company on international tours and working with post graduate apprentice dancers emerging into the professional world.

He has performed work by choreographers including Damien Jalet, Hofesh Shechter, Sharon Eyal, Liv Lorent, Victor Quijada, Rachel Lopez de la Nieta, Ben Duke and the two Scottish Dance Theatre Artistic Directors he has worked under, Janet Smith and Fleur Darkin.

While with Scottish Dance Theatre he continued to research and create his own choreographic work, enjoying choreographic commissions from the likes of The Scottish School of Contemporary Dance, West College Scotland, YDance, and The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, presenting his work, and teaching, nationally and internationally. He has researched his choreographic practice as part of ‘Choreodrome’ at The Place and with Scottish Dance Theatre, and worked collaboratively with Toby Fitzgibbons on two works.
