Kick Off Boys Youth Dance Project started as a pilot in 2016 between Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD) and Dance Action Zone Leeds (DAZL). Funded through widening participation monies this small scale pilot project worked with 10 boys from varying backgrounds across Leeds.
After the success of this pilot project NSCD and DAZL were joined by Phoenix Dance Theatre for a summer term intensive project in 2017. After a period of reflection in Autumn 2017 the partnership were joined by a fourth member Leeds City College. Each of the organisations have a different focus from FE, HE, Conservatoire dance providers, to health organisations and a professional touring dance company.
Combining our resources we are able to offer a weekly classes, half term intensives, and film projects, in 2018 Kick Off Boys Youth Dance Project have performed as part of the following platforms.
The main cohort of the boys are aged 12 – 18 years, with some older members from Leeds City College acting as mentors to the younger participants. The boys have been working on a project with lead artist Donald Edwards called ‘Painted Faces’, this focuses on mental health in young males and has been supported by training from Space 2 Leeds. This work includes live performance, film by Wayne Sables and an installation which was launched on 4th July 2018 at Leeds City College.
Kick Off is an all-male youth dance group in Leeds and we are looking for boys aged 12-18 , if you would like to join then click on the ‘book your place on the project’ button and fill in the online application form.
Weekly sessions run once a week on Tuesdays 6pm – 7.30pm at Leeds City College Park Lane Campus. Classes are energetic and develop strength, coordination and courage, you will work with other boys to improve your dance skills and to make pieces to be performed around Leeds.
Working with dance professionals you will have the opportunity to choreograph and perform at venues across Leeds, including Riley Theatre, Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre, Leeds City College and Morley Town Hall.
Dance has the ability and power to engage…It offers the strength to challenge and the grace to question. This is why dance is a brilliant medium for boys to explore their creativity and physicality. 2Faced Dance Co was formed out of an all-male youth dance company and has enabled many young men to go onto further training and become professional dancers and choreographers. I would really recommend this all male youth dance company to any young man wishing to start dancing in an environment that is comfortable, trusting and enables you to push your physical limits.
