Welcome to The Monocle, where freedom reigns.

Rendez-Vous Dance present the untold true story of ‘Le Monocle’, a notorious, underground lesbian nightclub in 1930s Paris. Step into a hedonistic world full of passion and sensuality, where women laugh loudly, love freely and dance the night away.

Blending virtuosic movement choreographed by Mathieu Geffré with evocative live music from Jazz singer Imogen Banks, experience this liberating performance as part of Lesbian Visbility Week 2024. 


Running time: 90 mins with interval

The performance contains scenes of a sensual nature, adult themes, partial nudity and reference to chest binding.

Age recommendation: 13+ - under 16 accompanied by an adult.

About The Company

Rendez-Vous Dance is the contemporary dance company led by award-winning choreographer Mathieu Geffré. Their core mission is to engage with LGBTQIA+ themes and voices throughout our activity.

Rendez-Vous is a vessel for the expression of a choreographic voice articulating values of equity, diversity and representation with great physicality, intricacy and virtuosity. Their practice of dance has no specific age, gender, ethnicity or cultural boundaries: it is universal.

About Mathieu Geffré

After graduating from the Paris Conservatoire in 2006, Mathieu Geffré has danced across Europe for 15 years. As a member of companies such as Dansgroep Amsterdam, Noord Nederlandse Dans, and National Dance Company Wales, he collaborated with numerous leading choreographers including Itzik Galili, Johan Inger, Mark Baldwin, Christopher Bruce and Angelin Preljocaj among others.

Alongside his performing career Mathieu has created and presented work on many European stages. Mathieu was awarded the 3rd Prize Choreography at the Copenhagen International Choreography Competition in 2016. Mathieu launched Rendez-Vous Dance in February 2021. He is the first recipient of the Made In The North East commission award enabling him to create The Monocle. Mathieu has also made work for Nationaltheatre Mannheim, Rambert School, CobosMika Seeds Company and Boston Dance Theatre. He is a celebrated dance facilitator who is regularly invited as a guest teacher for Company Wayne McGregor, Matthew Bourne New Adventures, Ballet de l’Opera du Grand Avignon and Venice Biennale among others.
