Centres for Advanced Training (CATs) at NSCD and Northern Ballet Academy come together to showcase Yorkshire’s brightest young dance talent.

Visionary choreographers from across the UK have created unique pieces to be performed by the talented CAT students.

NSCD young dancers will perform works choreographed by Alleyne Dance, James Cousins Dance Company, and NSCD alumni Mason Jubb and Anthony Middleton.

David Nixon (Artistic Director of Northern Ballet), Yoko Ichino and Cara O’Shea have created unique pieces for students at the Northern Ballet Academy.

The CAT scheme prepares some of the country’s most exceptional 13-17-year-old dancers for study at university or conservatoire level.

About the NSCD CAT choreographers

Alleyne Dance

This contemporary dance company blends Afro-Caribbean, Hip-Hop, Kathak, Latin and Circus Skills. Twin sisters Kristina and Sadé have worked for people such as Akram Khan and Gregory Maqoma, and their commissions and workshops have toured Europe and further afield.

James Cousins Dance Company

This company creates high quality, compelling dance productions which inspire and entertain global audiences. James Cousins won the New Adventures Choreographer Award in 2011, is a Work Place Artist at The Place and has been recognised as a future face of dance by Time Out magazine.

Mason Jubb

Mason Jubb began his dance training on the NSCD CAT scheme, then completed the BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance and danced as a member of VERVE 17. Since then, he has been a Company Dancer at Black Box Dance Company in Denmark, working with the likes of Tim Rushton (Danish Dance Theatre) and Jason Mabana (Akram Khan Company) and touring internationally.

Anthony Middleton

Creator of theMiddletonCorpus and resident at Kala Sangham, Anthony competed for the British Gymnastics squad before training at NSCD. His work combines acrobatics and dance, and has been performed at international platforms including Agitat Festival (Spain) and IX Contemporary Choreographic Competition (Bulgaria).

About the Northern Ballet Academy choreographers

David Nixon

As Artistic Director, David Nixon has added an impressive array of works to Northern Ballet’s repertoire, including The Great Gatsby, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Pan, and Beauty and the Beast. His productions have been staged worldwide in Europe, Canada, Australia, the USA and South Africa.

Yoko Ichino

Northern Ballet Academy Associate Director Yoko Ichino studied with world-renowned ballerina Mia Slavenska and has danced and taught at the Joffrey Balley, Stuttgart Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, National Ballet of Canada and Ballett der Deutshe Oper Berlin.

Cara O’Shea

Cara trained with London Junior Ballet and was a Cecchetti Scholar before joining Northern Ballet, where she remained as a teacher and head of the CAT programme. She has danced with Manchester City Ballet and Chelmsford Ballet Company.
