At the Riley Theatre, Guest Events
Milim presents their new theatre production, Meet Me At Cantors. Written by Anthony Clavane and Mike Levy and directed by Tash Hyman, it explores the joy and social lives of Leeds’ Jewish Teenagers in 1950’s Chapeltown. This show has been inspired by interviews with some of Leeds’s older Jewish residents, for whom Cantors fish and chip shop was the place to be. The play tells these stories from the perspective of current day Phyllis, Joyce, Jean, Harvey, Ivan and Malcolm reminiscing on this time in their lives how it has affected them to this day.
Chapeltown was home to a vibrant, working-class Jewish community. Jewish teenagers were allowed to be just like everyone else in Leeds and that included having a local hang out spot. Cantors was a landmark for all. Even being a point of reference for the bus conductors. Throughout the day there will be a photography exhibition of portraits taken by Jonathan Straight and a display from members of our adjoining youth project, Meet Me At The Zone. You will also be able to explore Chapeltown’s Jewish history via a digital walking tour.
This production has been supported and funded by Leeds 2023 and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
