Get to know Latif Arafan Wa-hab Diedhiou, VERVE RESIDENCIES 25/26 artist

Joining us here at NSCD from Senegal for a week of research, practice sharing and bespoke support from Alesandra Seutin and Matteo Marfoglia. These events offer a taste of his practice and artistic world.

The evening's event will include a Film Screening, Performance and a Discussion:

Film Screening | AIR DE TEMPS
This cinematic dance film is a collaboration between two-time NYDC Guest Artistic Director Alesandra Seutin and filmmaker Ben Williams, whose passion for hip hop has seen him work with the likes of the BBC.

AIR DE TEMPS tells of an urgent need to speak out, to delve into lost dreams, to confront your demons and regurgitate your resentment – have a voice. It’s a powerful process of taking action to shed the cloak of failure handed down generation after generation.

The film is set mostly in Bargny, a coastal town situated in Senegal and is a response to the in-process theatre work AIR DE TEMPS for the Jant-Bi II company based at École des Sables, Senegal and artistically led by Alesandra Seutin and Wesley Ruzibiza.

Performance | Kajumak
Kajumak plunges the spectator into the heart of my “Keur Bou Makk” (large family home), transformed into an anechoic chamber, where my cries as a wounded child remain inaudible. In this space of memory, spiritually connected to the soul of my late father, I take the audience through a universe where my suffering as a young boy resonates in the afterlife.

This solo expresses the silences I've lived through, imposed by the fear of abuse, and explores the living memory of the places I've inhabited as well as my bodily memory. This memory, rooted in my life as a child, is intensified by the unbreakable bond with my mother, a courageous woman who helped me move forward despite the pain.

The white cloth I place over my head materializes my dream world, creating a passageway between wakefulness and sleep, between reality and liberating dream.

Discussion
In response to the Film Screening and Performance join us for discussion and feedback with Latif Arafan Wa-hab Diedhiou and Alesandra Seutin
