We are delighted to share news that Matthew Robinson will join National Dance Company Wales as Artistic Director from September 2021. Matthew has, for the past five years, been Artistic Director and programme leader of VERVE, the postgraduate company of NSCD. Under Matthew's direction VERVE has become known for its bold commissioning, collaborating with world-renowned and fresh choreographic voices such as Botis Seva, Maxine Doyle and Sita Ostheimer to create distinct, engaging programmes of dance work that reach thousands of people each year, onstage, online and through outreach work.
Speaking of his time at NSCD, Matthew Robinson said:
"NSCD has been a home to me for five years. It has nourished, supported and challenged me, and through that I have grown and developed. I wish to thank NSCD, its staff and students for their support and generosity. This building, this community and this city have moulded me, they are part of me, and I take all I have experienced with me.
Over five years I have worked with 66 dancers, supporting them on their journey. I firmly believe that when we embrace who we are, celebrate who we are and grow from there, our possibilities are endless. I hope I leave behind a sense of possibility and ambition, that curiosity is key, that enquiry into who you are and what you can do is vital."
Speaking of Matthew's new appointment, Sharon Watson MBE, CEO & Principal of NSCD said:
“Congratulations Matthew. This is wonderful news. I don’t doubt your vision and expertise in the field will support and strengthen the mission and the vision of National Dance Company Wales.
You have worked intensely and with integrity here at NSCD, and we have been rewarded with your hard work. We applaud the work you have delivered which is demonstrated by the wonderful dancers we see on our stage each year and the amazing programming presented to our audiences. It will be a pleasure to see your continued growth with a world class contemporary dance company and to see you continue to build your artistic voice with even more clarity and innovation. NDCW are in for an invigorating journey”
Darren Carr, Vice Principal and Director of Studies at NSCD commented:
"We are thrilled when staff have the opportunity to move onto new ventures for their own personal and professional growth. NSCD offers a vibrant hub that nurtures talent, artistic practice and teaching, and encourages both students and staff to pursue their own goals. We would like to wish Matthew the very best and thank him for his passion, dedication and drive, and look forward to the exciting possibilities to come as we continue to work with NDCW in the future."
