NSCD BEGINS RILEY THEATRE TRANSFORMATION

Monday 27th July 2026, 7:00am NSCD Begins Riley Theatre Transformation

As part of our ongoing commitment to providing an exceptional student experience, we are excited to be investing in the transformation of our Riley Theatre and Lighting Studio, creating modern, future-ready spaces that reflect the realities of today's dance industry. Following our successful award of an OfS Capital Grant and funding from The Wolfson Foundation to support upgrades to the Riley Theatre, we are now delivering a major programme of improvements that will benefit our students, staff and audiences for years to come.

Working alongside main contractor GW Power and audio-visual specialists GVAV, we are upgrading the infrastructure that sits behind the scenes but plays a vital role in how our students learn, create and perform, providing the foundation for more dynamic teaching, enhanced performances and a more connected learning environment.

The refurbishment includes the installation of new energy-efficient LED lighting, intelligent lighting controls, and improved stage lighting capabilities, giving students greater flexibility to experiment, rehearse, and perform in professional-standard spaces. Alongside this, new electrical systems will support enhanced audiovisual technology, digital teaching methods and live streaming capabilities, helping our students develop the skills needed for today's evolving creative industries.

We are also investing in the overall comfort and accessibility of the building, with upgraded ventilation, air conditioning, heating and essential life safety systems creating a safer, more inclusive environment for everyone who uses the spaces. Improved hearing loop systems, access control, fire safety infrastructure and modern data cabling will ensure the Riley Theatre and Lighting Studio are equipped to support our community for years to come.

This investment is not just about updating our facilities, it is about investing in our students. By creating flexible, professional-standard learning and performance spaces, we are ensuring NSCD graduates have access to the technology and environments they will encounter throughout their careers.

As the project progresses, we look forward to welcoming students back into spaces that not only enhance their day-to-day experience but also support their creative ambitions long into the future.
