nscd 40th anniversary heritage open day

Step inside the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and discover the people, places and stories that have shaped one of the UK's leading contemporary dance institutions. 

As part of NSCD's 40th Anniversary celebrations, this special Heritage Open Day offers a unique opportunity to explore our historic Chapeltown site, including the former 'New Synagogue', now 'Riley Theatre', which has been home to the school since 1987. Visitors will learn about the building's rich heritage, its significance within Leeds' Jewish community, and the school's journey from Harehills Middle School to an internationally recognised centre for dance education.

Explore displays, photographs, archive materials, co-creative artworks and community stories gathered through NSCD's 40th Anniversary Heritage Project 'Kaleidoscope'. Discover memories from former students, staff, local residents and community groups, revealing how dance, creativity and cultural exchange have connected generations and communities across Leeds. Whether you have a connection to NSCD, an interest in local history, architecture, dance or community heritage, everyone is welcome! 

Join us for: 

• Exhibition of newly created and archive photos celebrating the legacy of Nadine Senior and the pupils of Harehills Middle School 
• A sculpture and research materials relating to the experiences of Chapeltown’s Windrush community and Leeds Black Elders 
• A sculpture, archive materials and research relating to the United Hebrew Congregation and the history of the NSCD building as Leeds New Synagogue 
• Oral history listening stations 
• Zine making with the NSCD archive 
• Archive film reflecting on Harehills Middle School, Chapeltown and the impact of NSCD 
• A heritage trail for young people and adults
