Since graduating from NSCD in 2014, Akeim has worked with numerous dance companies across the UK on a diverse range of projects. Born in Jamaica and raised in England, Akeim is a multifaceted performing artist who seeks to create moving, thought provoking, free spirited and accessible projects.
Founder of Dance Company Toussaint To Move, his latest solo production ‘Windows Of Displacement’, a project that was first devised and developed during Undergraduate study at NSCD, will be touring the UK throughout 2018-19. Working with dance, song and spoken word, Akeim explores diverse identities in today’s England. About ‘Windows of Displacement’ Toussaint says:
“Sharing my personal narrative of migration whilst dancing and singing to uplifting and inspiring my audience. This has to be a highlight in my career so far, that definitely begun in my third year at NSCD.”
In 2017 Akeim gained professional support through NSCD’s professional springboard programme Northern Connections.
From 2014-2016 Akeim worked with Wriggle Dance Theatre on family show ‘Once In A Blue Moon’ and BalletLorent’s & Carol Ann Duufy’s adaptation of Snow White. Akeim is also a performer in Heather Walrond Company’s gripping and exhilarating ‘The Rising.’ As a freelance dancer and Choreographer, Akeim hosts movement workshops across the UK.
“The greatest strength I learned at NSCD was collaboration. Without the understanding of where I stand within the wider context of community, culture and performance practices, I wouldn’t be the artist I am today. For this I am very grateful, and collaboration continues to inspire my work on many levels.”
