ALUMNUS CARLOS PONS GUERRA CREATES WORK WITH RAMBERT

Monday 14th September 2015, 9:51pm Alumnus Carlos Pons Guerra creates work with Rambert

Carlos Pons Guerra has been commissioned to create work on Rambert dancers for the company’s The Future programme. The Future, an evening of new choreography co-curated with Rambert’s partner venue, The Lowry, will feature works created by four company dancers. Pons Guerra is the first young choreographer from outside the company to be invited to work with Rambert in this way.

The Future is part of Rambert’s choreographic programme, which aims to develop a generation of diverse artists who are ambitious and have the confidence to work in large scale spaces and collaborate with artists from a variety of disciplines. The programme provides young choreographers from within the company with performance platforms, access to technical knowhow, dramaturgy, mentoring, the use of Rambert’s award-winning London studios and the opportunity to create work with the Company’s world-class dancers.

This year, for the first time, Rambert has extended these opportunities to external dance artists and invited Leeds-based choreographer and founder of DeNada Dance Theatre, Carlos Pons Guerra, to create a new work with the company’s dancers. The programme will also include works by Rambert dancers, Luke Ahmet, Simone Damberg Würtz, Patricia Okenwa and Pierre Tappon.

Inspired by the notion of battle, Carlos will present a bittersweet duet that explores physical excellence, competition and the emotional aggression shared in romantic relationships between men.

Pons Guerra says about the commission:
‘I am extremely proud to have been given the opportunity to create work for Rambert, a company I have looked up to as an example of excellence since my early days training as a dancer. Working with its incredibly able dance artists, being supported by its staff, and mentored by artistic director Mark Baldwin and dramaturge Peggy Olislaegers, will be an invaluable and hugely enriching opportunity for my development as a choreographer. I cannot be thankful enough that a national company of the history and calibre of Rambert is committed to nurturing emerging choreographers from outside the company like myself, and believe it’s an example to follow by companies worldwide.’

Carlos’ new work for Rambert can be seen in Manchester, The Lowry, on October 2nd, and in London, Rambert, on the 15-16 of December.
