BA Hons in Contemporary Dance
PG Diploma in Performance
Additional qualifications:
“I was an extremely shy child and avoided participating in activities outside of school until the age of 11 when I tagged along to a friend’s jazz dance class. My dance journey and love for moving began at that moment! I diligently worked my way through years of tap, jazz and ballet training and exams at a local dance school in Cardiff, growing in confidence. Between the ages of 15-18, I discovered a love for contemporary dance. I am proud to be able to successfully combine a demanding teaching role within HE with my important role as mum to three energetic, brilliant kids!
About my teaching:
My varied 10-year performance career shapes my preparation, practice, engagement and curiosity for teaching and learning. Following a rigorous Cunningham based technique format and incorporating aspects of strength, fitness and yoga work, my classes are fast-paced with complex sequencing, challenging both technical ability and performance skills. My teaching creates an inspiring and inclusive learning environment that encourages curiosity in learning and a positive approach to daily challenges.”
Deborah studied both undergraduate (BA Hons in Contemporary Dance) and Postgraduate Performance dance courses (Edge-PGDip) at London Contemporary Dance School, receiving First Class Honours and Distinction in her work.
Deborah has twenty-four year’s continuous professional experience in the industry, ten of those years working exclusively as a performer, nationally and internationally and fourteen years teaching in Higher Education.
On completing her BA Deborah danced with Edge, performing works by Wayne McGregor, Henri Oguike, Mark Baldwin and revivals of works by Siobhan Davies and Paul Taylor. On graduating she performed for several years in the physical theatre company Earthfall touring nationally and in Europe. For eight years Deborah then performed with the repertoire company National Dance Company Wales, rising to the position of Senior Dancer and mentoring the company’s apprentices. During her time with the company, Deborah was involved in the creation and performance of over 40 new works. Choreographers she has worked with include Sean Feldman (UK), Zvi Gotheiner (USA), Tommi Kitti (Finland), Hélène Blackburn (Canada), Stign Cellis (Belgium), Tony Mira (Spain), Juan Carlos Garcia (Spain) and Sean Tuan John (Wales). In 2006 she was an Associate on The Bank Project at the Siobhan Davies Dance Studios.
Deborah joined NSCD in January 2007 as Rehearsal Director for VERVE in its inaugural year. During her fourteen years at the school, she has held both teaching and managerial roles and responsibilities contributing substantially to developments across the curriculum.
Alongside teaching at NSCD, Deborah runs her own yoga business and specialises in teaching Sports’ yoga, Vinyasa yoga for older adults and children’s yoga classes.
