We are delighted to announce that we have appointed NSCD graduate Maya Carroll as the President of our Student Union. Maya will act as a figurehead for the Union, and work in this first year with the School to build the Union from the ground up, in close consultation with students and student societies.
Maya gained a BPA from NSCD in 2018 before progressing to the MA in Contemporary Dance Performance and touring with VERVE. Since graduating she has worked across Leeds and the North as a freelance dance artist with multiple companies and artists including Mobius Dance Company, Brink Dance Company, Jamaal Burkmar, Douglas Thorpe and Rod Dixon. Maya received CATAPULT Spin-Off funding from NSCD in 2019/20 to develop her own work in collaboration with fellow VERVE19 artist Henry Morris with support from Spin Arts, and the pair were chosen as resident artists at Shawbrook for 2020.
In her time as president Maya will build new links with other Leeds institutions and organisations, and work with NSCD to establish a public-facing identity for the Union. Her planned initiatives include partnering with local businesses to organise care packages for students who are self-isolating due to coronavirus, facilitating "virtual coffee mornings" for students to debate and socialise, and working with students to set up and run new societies. Watch this space!
92% of graduating students were satisfied with their overall experience at the School - 9% higher than the industry average.
Choreographer Gary Clarke and performer Shelley Eva Haden, both NSCD alumni, are working on Brecht and Weil's "Seven Deadly Sins".
