How to apply

Thank you for your interest in MA Contemporary Dance Performance (PPS) at NSCD.

Applications for 2024 Entry are now closed.


Our audition process for this course is as follows:

Stage 1 – Application & audition (by video)

  1. Read the guidance below and prepare your video audition
  2. Create an account and apply online, making sure to include a link to your recorded video footage
  3. Pay the £20 application fee

Stage 2 – Company recall auditions (in-person)

Companies shortlist candidates and invitations to recall auditions are sent out from NSCD Admissions. Shortlisted applicants attend any relevant Stage 2 company auditions, usually at NSCD.

Stage 3 – Interviews (in-person)

Following Stage 2 recall auditions, invited applicants are interviewed by both NSCD and the company.

Application and Audition Process

Making your application

Please ensure you submit your application and include a link to your video footage before the closing date.

Our application form asks for:

  1. Personal details
  2. Place of education
  3. Qualifications
  4. Place of dance education (this may be the same as your place of education)
  5. CV & Showreel (see guidance here)
  6. Company statements (up to 200 words for each company)
  7. Link to your video audition (see drop-down below for guidance)
  8. Company selections 
  9. Equality and Diversity information

Once you submit your application you will be redirected to NSCD Box Office either to pay the application fee.

Applications without payment will not be processed.

You will also receive an email confirmation from admissions@nscd.ac.uk. Please check and save this email. We recommend you add this email address to your contacts to avoid emails going into your junk/spam folder.

Stage 1 - Video Audition Link

All candidates must provide the following video audition footage as part of their application and this will be sent directly to companies to use as part of the shortlisting process:

  • Improvisation (max 3 minutes) 
  • Technical Work: Contemporary (3 exercises, maximum 5 minutes). Specific technical work to be learnt (at this link) and filmed as part of your video audition.
  • Technical Work: Ballet (3 exercises, max 5 minutes). Specific technical work to be learnt (at this link) and filmed as part of your video audition. 
  • Creative task: Create a solo or duet based on either: a) a text of your choice b) a site (can be performed in the chosen site) or c) an existing visual artwork (max 3 minutes) 
  • Verbal Personal Statement – tell us about yourself, your background and why you are applying for postgraduate study at NSCD. State which pathway you are interested in and why  (max 3 minutes) 

For information: During your solo and creative task, take the opportunity to show your full range of skills including any other dance styles, text or use of voice. 

Stage 2 - Company Recall Auditions

Candidates are notified when they have been shortlisted for a recall audition. The Admissions Team provides all shortlisted candidates with a document containing more information to help you prepare for this.

Stage 3 - Interviews

Candidates who are successful at recall audition are interviewed at the end of the audition day.

What we are looking for

Places are awarded to applicants who demonstrate the greatest potential to benefit from the course. The audition panel assesses performance ability and creativity underpinned by technical/physical understanding, as well as critical thinking and reflective engagement.

PPS Curriculum Lead Eric Assandri notes,

“Each participating company is looking for different and particular qualities and experiences relevant to the company; we advise you research your chosen companies so you know what they are about and what they might be looking for.”

Audition outcomes
  • All applicants from Stage 1 are notified as to which company auditions they have been shortlisted for.
  • Stage 3 interviews take place immediately after Stage 2 recalls and candidates are notified on the day if they have been selected for interview.
  • Offers are made following each company recall audition, depending on when the company notifies us.
  • Applicants who have not been made offers following the recall will either be placed on a reserve list (in the event further offers can be made) or receive an Unsuccessful Outcome. Please note some companies can accommodate reserve lists and others do not.
  • All candidates have 3 weeks from receipt of an offer in which to make a decision to accept
