ANTONIO BORRIELLO

CAT Contemporary Tutor

Antonio is a dance educator, choreographer, and rehearsal director with over 12 years of experience in the performing arts. He has taught at conservatoires, universities, and professional companies across the UK and Europe, and has extensive experience managing training programmes for young dancers.

Specialising in contemporary dance, Antonio trained at Codarts Rotterdam - University for the Arts (Netherlands), graduating with a Bachelor of Dance. He has danced professionally with Phoenix Dance Theatre (UK), Scapino Ballet Rotterdam (Netherlands), and Florence Dance Company (Italy); worked with renowned choreographers including Sharon Watson, Richard Alston, and Regina Van Berkel; and performed works by Jiří Kylián, Nacho Duato, Hans van Manen, and Henri Oguike, among others.

His teaching portfolio includes Phoenix Dance Theatre, Northern School of Contemporary Dance, The Place, The Hammond School, the Academy of Northern Ballet, KS Dance, Renaissance Arts, Morea Performing Arts, among others.

From 2015 to 2024, Antonio managed Phoenix Dance Theatre’s Youth Academy, overseeing its expansion from two to seven cohorts and supporting hundreds of young dancers. As Professional Training Manager, he also mentored students on placement and apprenticeship schemes at the company.

Antonio is part of the ISTD’s Contemporary Syllabus research and development team, working closely with Dr Ross McKim and the ISTD since 2017 on syllabus development, launch, and the delivery of teacher training courses in the UK, Italy, and internationally.

Passionate about leadership in the performing arts, Antonio earned an MSc in Management & Leadership (Distinction) from Leeds Beckett University in 2022, with a thesis on leadership and employee engagement in performing arts organisations. He is also a Clore Social Leadership Fellow (Emerging Leader 2023).
