BA (Hons) Dance (Contemporary)

Role and responsibilities:

Zak is part of the Learning & Participation Teaching Team and teaches the Saturday School Ages 5-6 class.

Who am I?

Zak is a freelance dance teacher and primary school teacher originally from Tamworth. He started dancing at 6 years old, studying tap, ballet, jazz, and acrobatics. He discovered contemporary dance at the age of 11, through his high school dance teacher (and founding member of Phoenix Dance Company) Village James.

At the age of 16, Zak joined the CAT scheme at the Birmingham Hippodrome, participating in projects such as HOME and the London 2012 Olympic build-up, working with a variety of dance artists/choreographers.

Career History

Zak studied at Norther School of Contemporary Dance, graduating in 2016 with First Class Honours and earning a performance award and leadership award. He worked with many choreographers including Sally Marie, Douglas Thorpe, Hagit Yakira and Angus McLean Balbernie.

Since graduating, Zak has been teaching dance at a number of places including, UPBEAT Dance StudioEast Riding CAT scheme, Leeds City College, Rose Bruford College and now Northern School of Contemporary Dance.

Zak is also a Primary School teacher, leading Art and dance in his school. He believes in creating an inclusive, safe space where anyone, of any ability, can enjoy the freedom of expressing themselves through movement.
