NSCD SHOWCASE 2018 GUEST ARTIST : THE HICCUP PROJECT

Monday 12th March 2018, 9:29pm NSCD showcase 2018 guest artist : The Hiccup Project

Brighton based comedy dance theatre duo ‘The Hiccup Project’ are one of 3 guest artists this year creating fresh new commissions on our undergraduates for Student Showcase. The duo, founded in 2014, was created by Chess Dillon-Reams and Cristina MacKerron after training together at NSCD.

Their first show ‘May-We-Go-Round?’ toured nationally including a critically acclaimed run at both Edinburgh Fringe and Brighton Fringe. The debut show won the ‘Fringe Review Award for Outstanding Theatre’, in addition to the South East Dance ‘Space to Dance’ Award. Their second work “It’s okay, I’m Dealing With It”, mentored by Ben Duke from Lost Dog Dance, premiered at Brighton Festival in 2017, before a sold out UK tour.

The Hiccup Project aim to create innovative and accessible work, with a humorous and gritty take on real-life experience, that can be enjoyed by audiences with any amount of prior experience of theatre and dance.

"We wanted to create a piece of work that would push the students physically & vocally, as well as an opportunity to explore who they are as dancers, right now, at the beginning of their journey "

Can you tell us what you are creating for Student Showcase 2018?

“Nineteen dance students entered the studio with a beautiful rawness and infectious energy. We felt their naivety, passion and drive towards dance.

Our work is inspired by those that we work with and their experiences are what drives the work. We wanted to create a piece of work that would push the students physically & vocally, as well as an opportunity to explore who they are as dancers, right now, at the beginning of their journey into the world of dance.

During the process, we’ve discussed and explored what it means to be dancer, how dancing makes each individual feel, why they were drawn to dance school and what they imagine their futures to be. The work is being led by what the students offer us and share with us. We are interested in their different personalities, ideas and quirks. We see this is as a little map of where their journey really began and feel privileged to have been a part of that.”

NSCD Student Showcase takes place over four nights 20-23 March and features exciting new commissions from guest artists drawn from across the UK and further afield.
