Thank you for your interest in MA Performance courses at NSCD.

This includes:
MA Interdisciplinary Dance Performance
MA Contemporary Dance Performance (VERVE)
MA Contemporary Dance Performance (PPS)

Applications for 2023 entry are now closed

The deadline for all applications is midnight Sunday 8 January 2023. Applicants wishing to apply for a placement with Tanzmainz will need to apply by Sunday 11 December 2022.  The audition for Tanzmainz is on Tuesday 13 December, 3-6pm at NSCD


Our audition process for 2023 entry is as follows:

STAGE 1 (in person)

  1. Apply online below, and indicate your preferred course(s)
  2. Book your audition date/time and pay the £20 application fee
  3. Attend your in-person audition

STAGE 1 (by video)

  1. Read the guidance below and prepare your video submission
  2. Apply online, indicating your preferred course(s) and include link(s) to your recorded footage
  3. Pay the £20 application fee

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEWS

In-person auditionees are invited to stay for an interview following their audition at NSCD.
Shortlisted video applicants are invited to attend 15-minute individual zoom interviews

STAGE 3 – RECALL AUDITIONS (VERVE & PPS only)

Shortlisted applicants from Stage 2 are invited to attend a small group recall audition at NSCD in February (VERVE) or at a company base in February/March/April (PPS).

NSCD auditions all applicants and our audition process is designed to assess your potential as a dance artist and your suitability for our courses.  We welcome all applicants regardless of disability, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or religion.

Our application form is available on this page until the closing date.

In-person audition places are limited so we recommend early submission of your application to guarantee your preferred audition date/time. We are unable to guarantee an in-person audition if places become full before the closing dates.

Our application form asks for:

  1. Course(s) you wish to be considered for: VERVE, PPS or Interdisciplinary Dance Performance
  2. Personal details
  3. Place of education
  4. Qualifications
  5. Place of dance education (this may be the same as your place of education)
  6. CV & Showreel
  7. Company Statements(s) if applying for PPS

Once you submit your application you will be redirected to NSCD Box Office either to:

a) book your audition, subject to availability (if auditioning in person) and pay the application fee

b) pay the application fee (if auditioning by video)

Applications without payment will not be processed.

You will also receive an email confirmation from admissions@nscd.ac.uk. Please check and save this email. We recommend you add this email address to your contacts to avoid emails going into your junk/spam folder.

Important information for Overseas Applicants 

The UK’s new points-based immigration system means that citizens of the EU, EEA and Switzerland now require a visa to study in the UK. Visit our Overseas Students page for more information.

MA Postgraduate Placements

UK company placements are not available for overseas applicants without EU Settled or Pre-settled status due to visa restrictions. However EU and EEA applicants are welcome to apply for placements with companies not in the UK. For more information on the Visa requirements for Postgraduate placements and who is eligible, see our PPS course page

Stage 1 in-person audition dates

STAGE 1 – IN PERSON auditions for all performance courses are:

  • Saturday 21 January | 9:00 – 12:30
  • Sunday 22 January | 9:00 – 12:30
  • Monday 23 January | 9:00 – 12:30
  • Tuesday 24 January | 9:00 – 12:30
  • Wednesday 25 January | 9:00 – 12:30
  • Thursday 26 January | 9:00 – 12:30

Please note the audition for Tanzmainz is on Tuesday 13 December, 3-6pm at NSCD

Successful candidates from the morning are invited to stay for a Stage 2 interview which will take place onsite in the afternoon.

Applicants wishing to be considered for MA Interdisciplinary Dance Performance will not be required to attend a Stage 3 Recall as decisions will be made following Stage 2 interviews.

Important: If applicants know in advance that they will not be able to attend relevant Stage 3 recall auditions for VERVE and/or PPS then please audition by video in the first instance rather than in-person.

Stage 1 in-person audition content
  • 9:00 – 10:00 Improvisation/Ballet
  • 10:00- 11:00 Contemporary
  • 11:00 – 11:15 Break
  • 11:15 – 12:00 Rep
  • 12:00 – 12:45 Creative session

The creative session concludes the audition and is an opportunity for you to show us your full range of skills. You are encouraged to work creatively and individually on a task whilst integrating your personal qualities, including any other dance styles, text or use of voice.

Stage 2 Interviews

Successful candidates will be invited to attend a Stage 2 interview at NSCD immediately following the audition, after a lunch period of 1-2pm. The timeframe depends on the amount of candidates the panel wish to interview, but interviews are expected to be 2-5/6pm.

Stage 3 recall auditions (VERVE)
  • Saturday 28 January 2023 | 9:30 – 15:00
  • Saturday 29 January 2023 | 9:30 – 15:00

Each day consists of:

  • 9:30 – 11:00 Class – contemporary
  • 11:00 – 11:15 Break
  • 11:15 – 12:45 Rep
  • 12:45 – 13:45 Lunch
  • 13:45 – 14:45 Creative
  • 14:45 – 15:00 Closing chat

Candidates will be notified by NSCD Admissions which day they should attend.

Stage 3 recall auditions (PPS)

Applicants wishing to apply for the Postgraduate Placement Scheme can select up to 6 companies to be considered for, from a list in the application form. The full list of companies will be available to choose from once announced mid-November.

Please note: If you wish to audition for Tanzmainz you will need to apply by Sunday 11 December 2022, as the audition for Tanzmainz is on Tuesday 13 December, 3-6pm

PPS Company Recall Auditions at NSCD or the Company Base (for shortlisted applicants only)

PPS Recalls/Company Auditions take place between February 18 – 20 March 2023. Applicants will be informed of specific dates and details once confirmed. Full details of the content of each audition and placement, as set by each host company, will be sent to applicants in January so they can be prepared if shortlisted.

What we are looking for

Places are awarded to applicants who demonstrate the greatest potential to benefit from the course. The audition panel assesses performance ability and creativity underpinned by technical/physical understanding, as well as critical thinking and reflective engagement.

Audition outcomes - Offers / reserve list
  • All applicants from Stage 1 and Stage 2 will be notified as to whether they have been shortlisted or not.
  • Offers for MA Interdisciplinary Dance Performance are made following Stage 2 interviews
  • VERVE offers are made shortly after the Stage 3 recall auditions.
  • Applicants who are shortlisted for a PPS recall audition with some or all of the companies will be provided with full information about dates and content
  • PPS offers are usually made after the final company audition to ensure that choices are as informed as possible for candidates
  • All candidates have 3 weeks from receipt of an offer in which to make a decision
  • Shortlisted candidates who are not initially offered a place after their auditions are placed on our reserve list with potential further offers being made over the following weeks.

Stage 1 video audition content

Specific technical work is required to be learnt (at this link) and filmed as part of your video audition.

  1. Technical Work: Contemporary (3 exercises, maximum 5 minutes)
  2. Technical Work: Ballet (3 exercises, max 5 minutes)
  3. Solo: improvised (max 3 minutes)
  4. Creative task: Create a solo or duet based on either: a) a text of your choice b) a site (can be performed in the chosen site) or c) an existing visual artwork (max 3 minutes)
  5. Verbal Personal Statement – tell us about yourself, your background and why you are applying for postgraduate study at NSCD. State which pathway your are interested in and why  (max 3 minutes)

For information: During your solo and creative task, take the opportunity to show us your full range of skills including any other dance styles, text or use of voice.

Please note: Those applying for MA Interdisciplinary Dance Performance only need to include elements 3, 4 and 5 but do not need to include elements 1 and 2.

Successful candidates will be invited to attend a Stage 2 interview over zoom, dates specified below under ‘Stage 2 interviews’.

Video applicants do not need to attend the VERVE recall in person but will need to attend any company auditions they are shortlisted for. Applicants wishing to be considered for MA Interdisciplinary Dance Performance will not be required to attend a Stage 3 Recall as decisions will be made following interviews.

 

Video applicant interviews

Successful video applicants from Stage 1 are invited to attend a 10 minute interview over zoom at a time TBC, on Thursday 19 January 2023. 

Stage 3 recall auditions (VERVE)

Successful applicants following Stage 2 interviews will be notified if they have been offered a place on VERVE, IDP and/or shortlisted for any PPS Company recall auditions. Video applicants do not need to attend a recall for VERVE or IDP, only any company auditions where necessary.

 

Stage 3 recall auditions (PPS)
