How to apply

Thank you for your interest in MA Contemporary Dance Performance (VERVE) at NSCD.

Applications close midnight, Sunday 7 January 2024.


Our audition process for this course is as follows:

IN-PERSON

Stage 1 – Application & audition

  1. Create an account and apply online
  2. Book your audition date & time and pay the £20 application fee
  3. Attend your in-person audition. If applying for Interdisciplinary Dance Performance too, you need only attend one Stage 1 audition.

Stage 2 – Interviews

Shortlisted auditionees are invited to stay for an interview following their audition at NSCD.

Stage – Recall audition 

Shortlisted applicants from Stage 2 are invited to attend a small group recall audition at NSCD on 27 January or 28 January 2024. (If you are unable to make these dates, please audition by video in the first instance.) The Admissions Team will notify applicants which date they should attend.

Stage 2 – Zoom interview

Shortlisted video applicants are invited to attend a 10-minute zoom interview

NSCD auditions all applicants and our audition process is designed to assess your potential as a dance artist and your suitability for our courses.  We welcome all applicants regardless of disability, ethnicity, gender, sexuality or religion.

In-person Auditions

Making your application

In-person audition places book up quickly so we recommend early submission of your application to guarantee your preferred audition date/time.

Our application form asks for:

  3. Qualifications
  4. Place of dance education (this may be the same as your place of education)
  5. CV & Showreel
  6. Personal Statement (up to 200 words)
  7. Equality and Diversity information

Once you submit your application you will be redirected to NSCD Box Office either to book your audition, subject to availability and pay the application fee.

Applications without payment will not be processed.

You will also receive an email confirmation from admissions@nscd.ac.uk. Please check and save this email. We recommend you add this email address to your contacts to avoid emails going into your junk/spam folder.

Stage 1 in-person audition dates

STAGE 1 – IN PERSON auditions for all MA performance courses are:

  • Friday 19 January | 9:00 – 14:15
  • Saturday 20 January | 9:00 – 14:15
  • Sunday 21 January | 9:00 – 14:15
  • Monday 22 January | 9:00 – 14:15
  • Tuesday 23 January | 9:00 – 14:15

Successful candidates from the morning are invited to stay for a Stage 2 interview which will take place onsite in the afternoon from 14:3018:00. Applicants should factor this in when booking travel.

Important: If applicants know in advance that they will not be able to attend relevant Stage 3 recall auditions then please audition by video in the first instance rather than in-person.

Stage 1 in-person audition content
  • 09:00 – 10:00  | Improvisation/ Ballet Release
  • 10:00 – 11:00 | Contemporary
  • 11:00 – 11:15 | BREAK
  • 11:15 – 12:00 | Improv/ States of Presence
  • 12:00 – 12:45 | LUNCH
  • 12:45 – 13:30 | Repertoire session
  • 13:30 – 14:15 | Creative session based on deconstructing the Rep Phrase

The creative session concludes the audition and is an opportunity for you to show us your full range of skills. You are encouraged to work creatively and individually on a task whilst integrating your personal qualities, including any other dance styles, text or use of voice.

Please note: Shortlisted applicants will be notified after the Creative Task if they are invited to attend an interview following the audition.

Stage 2 Interviews

Successful candidates are invited to attend a Stage 2 interview at NSCD immediately following the audition. Interviews are expected to take place from 2.30pm – 6pm.

Stage 3 recall audition
  • Saturday 27 January 2024 | 11:00 – 16:30
  • Sunday 28 January 2024 | 11:00 – 16:30

Each day consists of:

  • 11:00 – 12:30 | Class (Contemporary)
  • 12:30 – 12:45 | Break
  • 12:45 – 14:15 | Rep
  • 14:15 – 15:15 | Lunch
  • 15:15 – 16:15 | Creative
  • 16:15 – 16:30 | Closing chat
What we are looking for

Places are awarded to applicants who demonstrate the greatest potential to benefit from the course. The audition panel assesses performance ability and creativity underpinned by technical/physical understanding, as well as critical thinking and reflective engagement.

“VERVE is looking for students with curiosity and openness in embodying a diverse range of approaches which challenge the artform of contemporary dance. Students should demonstrate an enthusiasm for working within a company setting with a collaborative and supportive approach towards themselves and other members of the company.”

Audition outcomes
  • All applicants from Stage 1 and Stage 2 will be notified as to whether they have been shortlisted or not.
  • Offers for MA Contemporary Dance Performance (VERVE) are made following Stage 3 Recall auditions
  • Applicants who are not made offers following the recall will receive either a Shortlist or Unsuccessful Outcome
  • All candidates have 3 weeks from receipt of an offer in which to make a decision
  • Shortlisted candidates who are not initially offered a place after their auditions are placed on our reserve list with potential further offers being made over the following weeks.

Stage 1 video audition content
  • Improvisation (max 3 minutes) During your improvisation video, take the opportunity to play with dynamics, levels and the range of your physicality from detailed work to full embodiment exploration. This is not a set choreographic exercise but rather just a filming in the studio where you show us a range of your movement possibilities and styles.
  • Technical Work: Contemporary (3 exercises, maximum 5 minutes). Specific technical work is required to be learnt (at this link) and filmed as part of your video audition.
  • Technical Work: Ballet (3 exercises, maximum 5 minutes). Specific technical work is required to be learnt (at this link) and filmed as part of your video audition.
  • Creative task: Create a solo or duet based on either: a) a text of your choice b) a site (can be performed in the chosen site) or c) an existing visual artwork (max 3 minutes). During your creative task, take the opportunity to show us your full range of skills including any other dance styles, text or use of voice
  • Verbal Personal Statement – tell us about yourself, your background and why you are applying for postgraduate study at NSCD. State which pathway you are interested in and why  (max 3 minutes) 
Video applicant interviews

Successful video applicants from Stage 1 are invited to attend a 10-minute Zoom interview on either Tuesday 16 January or Wednesday 17 January 2024. The Admissions Team will inform you of when your interview is scheduled to take place and provide Zoom details.

  • Applicants placed on our reserve list may be made an offer at a later date.
  • All candidates have 3 weeks from receipt of an offer in which to make a decision
